ITV Reports Mixed Results in First Half of 2024

News
By Naman Ramachandran According To The variety)  British broadcaster ITV delivered a mixed financial performance for the first six months of 2024, as the company continues to navigate a shifting media landscape. ITV reported a significant 40% increase in adjusted EBITA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax and Amortization) to £213 million ($274.5 million) for the period ending June 30, 2024. This substantial growth came despite a 2% decline in group external revenue, which fell to £1.6 billion ($2.06 billion). The company’s production arm, ITV Studios, experienced a 13% decrease in revenue to £869 million. This decline was largely attributed to the lingering effects of the 2023 U.S. writers’ and actors’ strikes, which caused delays in production schedules and delivery of ...

How ‘Dìdi’ Director Sean Wang Created a Love Letter to the MySpace and AIM Era With His Deeply Personal Coming-of-Age Story

News
By Brent Lang According To The variety)  Back in 2008, MySpace was cool, flip phones were popular and it kinda sucked to be a 13-year-old boy. Technology has changed a lot since then, but as “Dìdi” — a touching, frequently hilarious coming-of-age story that unfolds in the early aughts — reminds us, the agony and indignity of being a teenager is timeless.  “Boyhood is messy,” says Sean Wang, the film’s 29-year-old writer and director, looking barely out of boyhood himself as he chats on Zoom from his living room. “And the experience of adolescence is pretty consistent across the generations. It’s why I can watch ‘400 Blows’ — a movie made before I was even born — and see myself in it.”  When “Dìdi” premiered at Sundance in January, where it earned some of the fe...

The trailer for James Mangold‘s “A Complete Unknown” is here, along with the first official footage of Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. In theaters this December, the biographical drama, written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, follows the folk music legend’s early years in New York City, leading up to the Earth-shattering moment he strapped on an electric guitar during his 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance. In the trailer, Chalamet walks the streets of Manhattan, passing Dylan’s favorite spots including Cafe Wha? and Hotel Chelsea. The actor sings a rousing rendition of Dylan’s 1963 protest song “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.” And a love triangle begins to brew between ...

Kevin Feige Says Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Return Proves That Robert Downey Jr. Coming Back as Iron Man ‘Can Be Done — If Great Care Is Taken

News
By Zack Sharf According To The variety)  Kevin Feige said in an interview with DiscussingFilm that Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in the new Marvel tentpole “Deadpool & Wolverine” proves that a door can certainly be opened for Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man or Captain America, respectively. “That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine,” Feige said when asked about Downey and Evans coming back. “So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring rol...

Twisters’ Director Lee Isaac Chung on How ‘Frankenstein’ Inspired the Final Tornado, Kate’s Hero Journey and Debates About That Kiss Scene

News
By Angelique Jackson According To The variety)  SPOILER WARNING: This story contains spoilers for “Twisters,” now playing in theaters. “Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung was well aware that people might be upset about the ending of the disaster thriller — namely the fact that its hero Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her tornado-wrangling knight in tight Levi’s, Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) don’t kiss at the end of the movie. “If you talk to my 13-year-old niece, her uncle made a huge mistake,” Chung tells Variety. Indeed, for more than an hour and a half of the film’s two-hour runtime, the tension builds between Kate and Tyler. From the first tip of his cowboy hat and their early verbal jabs (he nicknames her “city girl” and she pokes fun at him putting hi...
