Why Would Warner Bros. Fire Its Marketing Chief Ahead of Its Riskiest Movie Slate in Years?

News
By Rebecca Rubin According To The variety According To The variety On Jan. 7, Warner Bros. worldwide marketing chief Josh Goldstine was called into the office of his bosses, studio chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, at the end of the day to find out that he was being let go after four years at the company. His three year-contract was renewed in early 2024, so Goldstine’s dismissal came as a surprise to many on the Burbank lot, given that he played a key role in promoting successes that range from “The Batman” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to “Barbie” and “Wonka.” Goldstine’s firing was publicized the following day, at the height of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, which some found to be in poor taste, though knowledgable individuals chalked up the timing to an u...

Deadpool & Wolverine’ Cut X-Rated Disney Diss Revealed: Script Still Has ‘Mickey Mouse C—‘ Joke

News
By William Earl                    According To The variety Disney‘s R-rated action-comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a box office juggernaut this summer, and the creative team applauded the company for letting them poke plenty of jokes at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actors’ personal lives and many other frequently taboo topics. But there was one line that Ryan Reynolds was asked not to say by the company. In interviews ahead of the film’s release, Reynolds confirmed that one Deadpool joke was left out of the movie. Disney’s FYC online portal has released the official script, in which the original joke is written. The moment takes place after Deadpool learns that Magneto is already dead, and he breaks the fourth wall in anger: “FUCK! What we can’t even affor...

Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Keeps Making Waves With Biggest Black Friday Ever

News
By J. Kim Murphy According To The variety The big splash continues for Disney’s “Moana 2,” which earned a massive $54.5 million on Black Friday from 4,200 locations, shattering the $34.1 million record that was notched by “Frozen II” in 2019. Not only that, but the film has now earned $140 million and already surged past the five-day holiday weekend record by “Frozen II” ($125 million) — and it didn’t even need Saturday or Sunday grosses to do it. It’s a welcome return to the top for Walt Disney Animation, particularly after turning in two box office duds (“Strange World” and “Wish”) over the past two Novembers — and it’s strong evidence that the company’s family fare is still a superlative theatrical draw. “Moana 2” was originally conceived as a Disney+ series, but the studio’s deci...

Hot Frosty’ Review: Lacey Chabert Trades Fruitcake for Beefcake in Netflix’s Heartwarming Holiday Romp

News
By Courtney Howard According To The variety Shaking up holiday traditions in irreverently welcome ways, director Jerry Ciccoritti and writer Russell Hainline’s “Hot Frosty” redesigns the look and feel of the familiar snow-made showcase. Their story, centered on a wishful widow who magically transforms a snowman into a hunky rube, balances its sillier aspects with a touching sense of sincerity. They do away with the cartoonish character’s corncob pipe, coal eyes and rotund body, replacing these features with beefy biceps, chiseled bone structure and sculpted abs. The narrative delivers some refreshing highlights for the benefit of Netflix’s Holiday Cinematic Universe, specifically acknowledging its target audience’s yearning for a sprinkling of cheeky, wanton lust alongside its...

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Red One’ Targets $30 Million Box Office Bounty

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Red One’ Targets $30 Million Box Office Bounty

News
By Rebecca Rubin According To The variety Will “Red One,” a Christmas action-comedy where Dwayne Johnson plays Santa’s head of security, bring movie theaters a box office bounty? The film, from Amazon MGM, is targeting $30 million to $35 million from 4,032 locations in its first weekend of release. Independent tracking services are mixed, suggesting that “Red One” could earn as little as $25 million and as much as $40 million in its debut. Ticket sales on the higher end of that range would be decent for an original holiday film. However, “Red One” cost $250 million before accounting for global marketing efforts. So either way, the movie will need positive word-of-mouth to portend a long life in theaters and justify its cost. Of course, Amazon MGM cares about much more than box off...
