Song Sung Blue’ Review: Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Form a Neil Diamond Tribute Band in a Different Kind of Faith-Based Movie

News
By Owen Gleiberman According To The variety I’ve never been wild about the term “faith-based movie” — or, at least, about the idea that it should just be applied to PG-rated calamity-meets-redemption Sunday-school soap operas micro-targeted to Evangelicals. “Song Sung Blue,” in almost every way, is a faith-based movie, though this one is rooted in the holly holy dream of devotion to the church of Neil Diamond. It’s based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sarina (played by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson), who in the late ’80s and ’90s formed a Neil Diamond tribute band, performing as Lightning & Thunder (he’s Lightning, she’s Thunder). At first, the movie may strike you as a parable of more kitsch than faith. The two meet at a performance at a scuzzy casino in their h...

What’s the Problem with ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere’? The Problem Is That ‘Nebraska’ Is a Bore

News
By Owen Gleiberman According To The variety The latest poster for “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” features a painting of Bruce Springsteen in concert, viewed from the side, his index finger held high in the air. If you examine his face, you’ll see that it looks a lot more like Bruce than it does like Jeremy Allen White, the actor who plays him. You can understand why: Jeremy Allen White doesn’t look very much like Springsteen. (There’s a touch of last-minute desperation to that poster.) The lack of an acute resemblance isn’t fatal in a biopic, but it’s one of a number of things about “Deliver Me from Nowhere” that just feel…off. Another disarming detail is the aha moment when Bruce first gets the idea for “Nebraska” by catching “Badlands” on TV. In a w...
