Super Paradise’ Follows Mykonos’ Path From Hippie Paradise to Party Island and Billionaires’ Playground

Super Paradise’ Follows Mykonos’ Path From Hippie Paradise to Party Island and Billionaires’ Playground

News
By Christopher Vourlias According To The variety In one of the many eye-opening moments in “Super Paradise,” Greek filmmaker Steve Krikris’ loving documentary portrait of the island of Mykonos, Marilli Tsopanelli, a writer and multi-disciplinary teacher of mime and dance, recalls the bohemian, free-loving spirit that prevailed on the island in the 1960s and ’70s. “Most of my friends lost their virginity in 1971,” Tsopanelli explains. Another interview subject puts it more bluntly: “So much sex.” It would be inaccurate to characterize Krikris’ documentary as a lusty romp through the hedonistic heyday of “a scandalous place,” as another of the film’s talking heads describes it; indeed, the director, who spent summers on Mykonos throughout his youth, thoughtfully traces the island’...

Jenna Ortega Says One of Her ‘First Jobs’ Was on ‘Iron Man 3’ But Marvel ‘Took All My Lines Out’: ‘They Even Took My Name Away’

News
By Jack Dunn According To The variety If you blinked, you may have missed Jenna Ortega‘s MCU debut in 2013’s “Iron Man 3.” In a sit down with Entertainment Tonight, Ortega briefly discussed her small role in the film after the interviewer told her, “I’m hoping that we can get Jenna Ortega into the Marvel Universe.” “I did it once,” Ortega replied. “It was one of the first jobs I ever did. They took all my lines out. I’m in ‘Iron Man 3’ for a quick second. I take up the frame, I have one leg and I’m the vice president’s daughter.” Paul Rudd, who was interviewed alongside Ortega, then interjected, hopeful that the “Scream” star could one day return to the MCU. Marvel is very good at like, kind of laying those bread crumbs,” Rudd, an MCU veteran, said. “And ...

Inside Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Premiere With Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot

News
By Katcy Stephan, Angelique Jackson According To The variety When Rachel Zegler stepped onto the red carpet at the world premiere of Disney’s “Snow White” on Saturday afternoon in Hollywood, the newest Disney princess was greeted by a smaller-than-usual assembly of photographers to capture her light pink ballgown and dazzling diamonds. Zegler’s co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, soon followed, also smiling dutifully for the cameras assembled in the center of the tented venue outside the El Capitan Theatre that hosted the pre-party celebration ahead of the 3:30 p.m. screening. Instead of the usual lineup of dozens of red carpet reporters, the only interviewers they encountered were employed by Disney, like Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the studio’s 1989 ...

Novocaine’ Amped Up the Romance and Limited Jack Quaid’s Head Wounds So It Was Funny, Not Grim: ‘We Didn’t Want His Face to Be Mashed Potatoes’

News
By William Earl According To The variety Dan Berk and Robert Olsen grew up obsessed with the golden era of ’80s action movies, worshipping box office hits like “Midnight Run,” “Lethal Weapon” and “Die Hard.” When they came across the script for a high-concept film named “Novocaine” — in which a mild-mannered man named Nate can’t feel pain and has to save his love interest from violent bank robbers — they loved the idea. But they were eager to add the humor and pathos that elevated their favorites. “There was something about those films where they’re very funny, yet they don’t lose their stakes,” Olsen says. “They’re not such a comedy that they don’t care about the characters. They have protagonists you get to know.” Luckily, Berk and Olsen, who had previously written and directed ...

Netflix Crew Member Settles Suit After Near-Fatal Fall at Sunset Gower Studios

News
By Gene Maddaus According To The variety A crew member on the Netflix film “Me Time” has settled a lawsuit over a near-fatal fall that left him with a traumatic brain injury. Michael Oronoz was working as a grip at Sunset Gower Studios in September 2021, when he fell from the catwalk to the floor 33 feet below. He was in a coma for three weeks, and had to relearn how to talk and how to walk over the course of a long recovery. He sued Hudson Pacific Properties, the facility owner, in 2023, alleging that the company had failed to properly maintain the 1957 building. The suit was dismissed on Monday. Attorneys on both sides declined to comment on the resolution, and terms were not disclosed. Netflix, which was not a party to the suit, also declined to comm...

How Trans Coming-of-Age Comedy ‘She’s the He’ Plays on Locker Room Hysteria to Tackle the ‘Fear Around Every Corner’ of the Trump Era

News
By Adam B. Vary According To The variety In the indie comedy “She’s the He,” which premiered at SXSW on Sunday, high school seniors Alex and Ethan decide during the last week of school to pretend they’re trans so they can sneak into the women’s locker room. If that sounds like a premise lifted right out of MAGA-era attacks on trans rights, it’s because it is — that’s the point. First-time writer-director Siobhan McCarthy dreamed up the idea just over a year ago, in February 2024, after discovering online that the one high school comedy that spoke to them as a teenager — the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy “She’s the Man” — was just as formative for many other trans kids. That led to a conversation with their friend, Will Geare (who co-edited “She’s the He” with McCarthy)...
