News
By Cynthia Littleton According To The Daily)  The sides have made it official: David Ellison’s Skydance Media has set a deal with Paramount Global that calls for Ellison to become chairman and CEO of an enhanced Paramount while former NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell will take operational reins as president. “In 1987, my father, Sumner Redstone, acquired Viacom and began assembling and growing the businesses today known as Paramount Global,” Shari Redstone said in announcing the pact late Sunday. “He had a vision that “content was king” and was always committed to delivering great content for all audiences around the world. That vision has remained at the core of Paramount’s success and our accomplishments are a direct result of the incredibly talented, creative, ...

All Happy Families’ Review: Not All Indie Family Dramedies Are Alike

All Happy Families’ Review: Not All Indie Family Dramedies Are Alike

News
By Michael Nordine According To The Daily)  “All happy families are alike,” claims the immortal first sentence of Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”; “each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” And while jaded viewers may opine that all indie dramedies about dysfunctional families in the “Little Miss Sunshine” or “The Squid and the Whale” mold are alike, writer-director Haroula Rose’s “All Happy Families” suggests the genre has moved in a more grounded direction. Whether that’s ultimately a better direction remains to be seen. The focal point of this particular family is Graham (Josh Radnor), an aspiring screenwriter/actor whose older brother Will (Rob Huebel) stars on a hugely popular (and seemingly terrible) TV series. As Will surprises Graham by flying from Los Ange...

X-Men’ Actor Returns as Pyro After 18 Years in ‘Deadpool 3,’ Says He’s ‘Very Happy’ to Wear a ‘Proper Superhero Costume’ and Not Get ‘Shortchanged’ This Time

News
By Zack Sharf According To The Daily) Marvel fans are expecting a ton of mind-blowing cameos in the upcoming “Deadpool and Wolverine,” but one returning X-Men actor has already been revealed: Aaron Stanford as Pyro. The actor popped up in the official “Deadpool and Wolverine” trailer, much to the delight of fans. Stanford debuted as John Allerdyce, aka the mutant Pyro, in 2003’s “X2: X-Men United” and reprised the role in 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He’s now back after an 18-year break and “very happy” with the results. “I was just very happy to even have a costume,” Stanford said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his return as Pyro. “In the original ‘X-Men’ films, Pyro gets really shortchanged in terms of a costume.” “In ‘X2,’ we start off wi...

Imagine Entertainment Enlists J.P. Morgan to Field Sale Offers

News
By Cynthia Littleton According To The Daily) Imagine Entertainment is in the market for suitors again now that leaders Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have tapped J.P. Morgan to field incoming inquiries for the production company behind such distinctive hits as “A Beautiful Mind,” “Apollo 13,” “24” and “Friday Night Lights.” A representative for Imagine declined to comment Monday on a report in the Wall Street Journal on the hiring of J.P. Morgan. A rep for the investment bank did not immediately return a request for comment. A source close to the situation notes that the process is in the early stages and was prompted by incoming calls to Howard and Grazer. Imagine is one of the few sizable independent outfits that remain major players in film and TV. At a time of...

‘Real’ Review: Oleh Sentsov’s Ukrainian War Documentary Is Unplanned but Utterly Immersive

News
By Guy Lodge According To The Daily) A lot of great cinema is made by happy accidents: certain intangible chemistries and tricks of timing that can’t be calculated even by the most exacting auteur. In the considerably rarer case of “Real,” the whole film is an accident, and one more vital than happy. Shot inadvertently while director Oleh Sentsov — not working as a filmmaker, but as a lieutenant in the Ukrainian Defense Forces — was holed up with his unit during a perilous battle in the early days of the war against Russia, the film captures the horror and claustrophobia of trench warfare with an immediacy that no big-budget fictional combat movie could hope to match, all courtesy of a GoPro camera on Sentsov’s helmet that he accidentally turned on while checking his equi...
