By Kate Aurthur, Adam B. Vary According To The variety There have been years when the Primetime Emmys telecast is riddled with surprise, out-of-left-field winners, and until the very last minute, this ceremony was not one of them. As the experts predicted, “Shōgun” pretty much ran the table, and it and “The Bear” both set records for the most awarded shows ever for a drama and a comedy, respectively. As the hosts Eugene and Dan Levy also noted in their opening banter, “Shōgun” actually set its record during the Creative Arts Emmys with 14 wins, and only furthered that record with four wins on Sunday. And “The Bear” set its record despite providing the one true shock of the night, its loss for best comedy to “Hacks”! Meanwhile, the Emmys did manage to slip in som...

News
By J. Kim Murphy According To The variety It’s still the ghost with the most money at the box office this weekend, with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” retaining the top slot on domestic charts in its second weekend. Universal’s horror play “Speak No Evil” is putting up a modest but solid performance as runner-up though, with $4.9 million from 3,375 locations across Friday and preview screenings. That puts it on the higher side of tracking for a $10 million to $13 million opening, which the James McAvoy vehicle had drawn before the weekend. It’s a strong start for the Blumhouse Productions thriller, especially on a typically lean budget of $15 million. Reviews have been strong for the James Watkins-directed remake, which nearly functions as a scene-for-scene (to a point) recreati...

The two are brought together by the precarious immigration status of Ana Maria, Mechi’s pregant caregiver who requires a steady job to remain in Panama after leaving her home of Columbia three years prior. The nurse thinks a child might help if the paperwork doesn’t come through. But in director Ana Endara’s compassionate drama, her characters find a safe haven where they least expect it. A good old-fashioned tearjerker with some enlivening flourishes, like the orchids that peek out of the shrubb...
