News
By Aramide Tinubu According To The variety)  SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent” Season 1 finale titled “The Verdict.”  Since David E. Kelley’s “Presumed Innocent” debuted on Apple TV+ last month, the series has taken viewers on a ride filled with shocking clues and troubling revelations, all while diving into the minds of narcissistic and obsessive men. Over eight episodes, “Presumed Innocent” followed former chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was on trial for the murder of his lover and colleague Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). In the “Presumed Innocent” finale — an episode that was not provided as a screener ahead of time to journalists —viewers learned that Carolyn’s...

China Box Office: ‘Twisters’ Is Blown Away as ‘Successor’ Enjoys $89 Million Weekend

News
By Patrick Frater According To The variety)  “Successor,” a Chinese-produced comedy drama about escape from poverty, dominated a big weekend at the Mainland China box office. The session also saw an impressive re-release for Japanese animation “Your Name” and Hollywood action film “Twisters” blown into instant irrelevance. Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “Successor” earning RMB633 million ($89.1 million) between Friday and Sunday in China. While this represented the film’s official first weekend, “Successor” finished Sunday with a cumulative total of RMB1.55 billion or $219 million. That is due to two days of wide screenings a weekend earlier that were considered as previews (causing the title to be omitted from Comscore charts a week earlier) and ...

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Leads as Indian Box Office Hits $600 Million in First Half of 2024

News
By Naman Ramachandran According To The variety)  The Indian box office has crossed INR50 billion ($600 million) in gross collections for the first half of 2024, marking a 3% increase from the same period last year, according to a report from Ormax Media. The report provides Indian local numbers and not worldwide grosses for the films. Sci-fi epic “Kalki 2898 AD” emerged as the undisputed champion of the period, dominating the local box office with a $92.3 million gross. This sum contributed 15% of the total box office, significantly bolstering June’s performance and pushing the month’s collections past $144 million. Bollywood air force action film “Fighter” secured the second spot with $29 million locally, while “Hanu-Man,” the Telugu-language mythological superhero film, clo...

You’ve Got Male: How ‘The Bikeriders’ Taps into Our New Ambivalence About the Primal Masculine Mystique

News
By Owen Gleiberman           According To The variety)  I was late catching up to Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” and though the film has gotten some good reviews, like Peter Debruge’s rave in Variety, it’s fair to say that the collective response to it has been mixed to muted. “The Bikeriders” hasn’t exactly set off a chain reaction of retro biker fever. It seems as if more than a few people don’t quite know what to make of it: a drama based on Danny Lyon’s 1968 black-and-white photography book, which captured the rough-riding lives of a Chicago motorcycle gang called the Outlaws (who, in the movie, become the Vandals), their exploits now presented, in Nichols’ film, in all their unvarnished bad-boy grit and glory. Personally, I loved the film, and came out of it wi...
Why George Clooney Was the Perfect Messenger to Call for an Election Shake-Up

Why George Clooney Was the Perfect Messenger to Call for an Election Shake-Up

News
By Daniel D'Addario According To The variety)  George Clooney’s New York Times op-ed calling for President Biden to drop out of the election felt like something more than standard-issue celebrity activism for a few reasons. For the political class, it was not just an actor speaking, but a major Democratic Party donor and fundraiser — one whose insight on Biden’s age and manner was bolstered by his having seen the President in action at a June 15 fundraiser. But for the general public, something more ineffable is at work. On- and off-screen, Clooney has painstakingly constructed an image for himself that’s unlike practically any of his peers on the A-list. As an actor and as a public figure, Clooney is a self-styled American conscience, a leading-man throwback who provi...

Mia Goth Allegedly Told ‘MaXXXine’ Extra Suing Her for Battery on Set That ‘Nobody Will Believe You Because You’re Nothing’

News
By Adam B. Vary, Angelique Jackson According To The variety)  In an online report, James Hunter has provided new details regarding his lawsuit against “MaXXXine” star Mia Goth, director Ti West and A24 alleging that Goth kicked him in the head while he was performing as a background actor on the set of the horror film. In his original complaint, Hunter claimed that he informed the film’s second assistant director that Goth nearly stepped on him during a scene in which he had to lay down on the ground while Goth ran past him. In the next take, Hunter alleges that Goth intentionally kicked him in the head, causing him a concussion, and then “taunted, mocked and belittled him” when Hunter went to use the bathroom. In a new interview w...
