Former MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe Pleads Guilty to Securities Fraud Conspiracy

News
By Gene Maddaus Former MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe pleaded guilty Monday to a securities fraud charge, admitting that he conspired to deceive the public and investors about the sustainability of the company’s $9.95-a-month movie subscription service. Lowe, 72, faces a maximum of five years in federal prison. Under his plea agreement, made public on Monday, Lowe agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and regulators, which could result in a reduced sentence. “Mitch is a good man who is looking to move forward with his life,” said his attorneys, Margot Moss and David Oscar Markus, in a statement. “He has accepted responsibility for his actions in this case and will continue to try to make things right.” Ted Farnsworth, the former CEO of parent company Helios and Mat...

A Humdrum Emmys Are Weighed Down by Sparse Crowds and Sponsored Content: TV Review

A Humdrum Emmys Are Weighed Down by Sparse Crowds and Sponsored Content: TV Review

News
By Alison Herman According To The variety It’s hard to make a yearly awards show feel special when it’s staged twice in one year. Such was the challenge facing the 76th annual Emmy Awards, which aired just eight months after its warmly nostalgic predecessor due to the prior show’s strike-related delay. (Both shows were helmed by the same producing team.) Factor in the Television Academy’s tendency toward repeat honorees — and more recently, select shows to sweep all awards in their category within a given year — and it’s understandable why Sunday’s broadcast was a relatively muted affair. But drab is drab. Whatever the justifications, the 76th Emmys were a far less dynamic and more stilted watch than the January show. ake the signature flourish of a night t...
The Deb’ Review: Rebel Wilson Lets Her Musical Roots Show in Ribald Satire of Modern Courtship

The Deb’ Review: Rebel Wilson Lets Her Musical Roots Show in Ribald Satire of Modern Courtship

News
By Peter Debruge According To The variety According to tradition, debutante balls are designed to introduce young ladies to polite society. But in Australian comedy star Rebel Wilson’s rowdy directorial debut, “The Deb,” there isn’t really anything that resembles “polite society.” Wilson’s characters run the gamut from uncouth to in-your-face offensive — none more than the tacky small-town beautician Wilson embodies in a brash, John Waters-esque musical satire, situated where overzealous progressive values meet old-school pageantry at its most patriarchal. It’s unfortunate that the film’s Toronto Film Festival closing-night premiere is overshadowed by legal disputes between Wilson and three of her producers, since “The Deb” delivers where it counts. The project pokes f...

Box Office: ‘Speak No Evil’ Pipes in With $4.9 Million Opening Day, ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Still Shaking on Top

News
By J. Kim Murphy According To The variety It’s still the ghost with the most money at the box office this weekend, with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” retaining the top slot on domestic charts in its second weekend. Universal’s horror play “Speak No Evil” is putting up a modest but solid performance as runner-up though, with $4.9 million from 3,375 locations across Friday and preview screenings. That puts it on the higher side of tracking for a $10 million to $13 million opening, which the James McAvoy vehicle had drawn before the weekend. It’s a strong start for the Blumhouse Productions thriller, especially on a typically lean budget of $15 million. Reviews have been strong for the James Watkins-directed remake, which nearly functions as a scene-for-scene (to a point) recreati...

Luminate Streaming Ratings: ‘Rings of Power’ Falls to No. 4 as ‘Perfect Couple’ Leads With 3.4 Billion Minutes Watched

News
By Selome Hailu According To The variety “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 suffered a major viewership drop in its second week on Luminate’s weekly streaming originals chart. Last week, the Amazon Prime Video series managed to nab second place with 764.7 million minutes watched in the first full week of availability of its first three episodes combined with the first day of availability of its fourth episode. But during the Sept. 6-12 viewing window — which included the first full week of Episode 4 and the first day of Episode 5 — it only hit 372.7 million minutes watched, landing in fourth place. While there was less new content to watch compared to the week before, when the first three episodes has just debuted, it still doesn’t bode well for a large IP title to ...

Demi Moore Is Bloody Oscar-Worthy in Coralie Fargeat’s Body Horror Sensation ‘The Substance’

News
By Clayton Davis According To The variety “The Substance” is more than just blood and guts — it’s got a career-topping performance by Demi Moore, who is worthy of serious Oscar consideration. In Coralie Fargeat’s daring body horror film Moore delivers possibly her most daring role ever. A dark exploration of youth, beauty and the relentless demands on women in Hollywood, it’s a visual stunner with jaw-dropping prosthetics and an engrossing narrative. It’s already generating buzz after debuting at Cannes, but now adding Toronto Film Festival to the mix, it’s become a fan (and industry) favorite and could be on the road to the Academy Awards. But how do you describe the experience of watching such an audacious film? Imagine if movies were people. Then picture “Deat...
